When We Pour Concrete, We Do It Right

Concrete is permanent the moment it sets. We take the time to prep, reinforce, and place it correctly — because there’s no redo once it cures.

Unlike grading or many other trades, concrete work doesn’t give you a second chance once it’s poured. It’s permanent. That’s exactly why Jacob General Construction takes concrete as seriously as we do. With more than 15 years of experience, we’ve learned that a great concrete job isn’t just about the pour itself — it’s about everything that happens before it: the site prep, the base, the forms, and the reinforcement.

Concrete will always crack to some degree due to shrinkage and expansion — that’s simply the nature of the material. Our job is to control and minimize that cracking through proper site preparation, correct reinforcement placement, and sound pouring and finishing practices. That focus on doing the groundwork right is what separates a concrete surface that lasts for decades from one that starts cracking and crumbling within a few years.

What Our Concrete Service Includes

We handle concrete work for homeowners and commercial properties throughout North Georgia, including:

  • Concrete driveways — new installation and replacement
  • Reinforced concrete slabs for homes, garages, and additions
  • Concrete patios and walkways
  • Concrete pads for sheds, garages, and outbuildings
  • Sidewalks and paved walking surfaces
  • Commercial concrete paving and slabs
  • Site grading and base preparation ahead of the pour
  • Reinforcement placement (rebar, wire mesh) for structural integrity
  • Control joint placement to manage cracking

Because grading is one of our core services, we don’t treat concrete work as a stand-alone job. We grade and prep the site correctly before any concrete goes down, which gives you a stable, well-drained base that supports the slab for the long term instead of shifting or cracking early.

Why Proper Concrete Preparation Matters

Most concrete problems don’t start with the concrete itself — they start with what’s underneath it. A slab poured over poorly compacted or poorly graded ground will settle unevenly, crack prematurely, and can even become a safety hazard over time. Reinforcement that’s placed incorrectly, or skipped altogether, leaves a slab with far less structural strength than it should have.

Since concrete is permanent once it cures, there’s very little room for error. That’s why we focus heavily on the steps before the pour: making sure the base is properly graded and compacted, forms are set correctly, and reinforcement is placed exactly where it needs to be. Controlling shrinkage and expansion cracking through correct control joint spacing is another detail that’s easy to overlook but makes a real difference in how a slab holds up over time.

Whether it’s a driveway that needs to handle vehicle weight for decades or a patio that just needs to look good and stay level, the prep work is what determines whether you’re happy with the result five or fifteen years down the road.

Our Concrete Process

We start by evaluating the site — checking the grade, soil conditions, drainage, and exactly what the concrete needs to support, whether that’s foot traffic, a vehicle driveway, or a structure. From there, we grade and prepare the base so it’s properly compacted and sloped for drainage.

Next, we set forms to the correct dimensions and place reinforcement — rebar or wire mesh, depending on the application — to give the slab the structural strength it needs. We plan control joints in advance to help manage the natural cracking that comes from shrinkage and expansion.

Once everything is prepped, we pour and finish the concrete with attention to detail, then allow proper curing time before the surface is put into use. We walk the finished project with you to make sure it meets expectations before we call the job complete.

Common Concrete Projects We Handle

  • New driveway installation and driveway replacement
  • Reinforced slabs for garages, workshops, and additions
  • Patios and outdoor living spaces
  • Walkways and sidewalks
  • Pads for storage buildings and outbuildings
  • Commercial parking and paved surfaces
  • Concrete repair and replacement where old slabs have failed

Residential and Commercial Concrete

We work with homeowners looking for a new driveway, patio, or slab, as well as builders and commercial property owners who need paved surfaces, pads, or reinforced slabs done right. No matter the size of the project, we apply the same standard: proper grading, proper reinforcement, and careful finishing.

What Sets Us Apart

Jacob General Construction has more than 15 years of experience with concrete, grading, and septic work throughout North Georgia. We understand that concrete is one of the few parts of a project you can’t easily redo, so we don’t cut corners on the prep work that determines how it holds up.

We work directly with homeowners and don’t consider any job too small. Because we also handle grading and site work in-house, your concrete project gets the benefit of a properly prepared base from a team that understands how the ground beneath a slab affects everything poured on top of it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about site grading, septic permits, or concrete placement? Here are answers to our most common client inquiries.

Some cracking is normal and expected due to shrinkage and expansion in the material. Our focus is on controlling and minimizing that cracking through proper base prep, reinforcement, and control joint placement, not eliminating it entirely, which no concrete contractor can promise.

The ground underneath your slab determines how it settles over time. A properly graded and compacted base helps prevent uneven settling, premature cracking, and drainage problems around the slab.

We use the reinforcement method that fits the project — rebar for driveways and structural slabs that need extra strength, and wire mesh for lighter-duty applications like some patios and walkways.

Concrete typically needs several days before light use and closer to a month to reach full strength, though this varies by project. We’ll walk you through the specific timeline for your job.

Yes. We handle removal of old concrete along with regrading and repouring, so the new slab has a properly prepared base instead of sitting on the same conditions that caused the original to fail.
